Research in learning disability: To what end?
by Professor Roy McConkey as part of the School for Policy Studies Seminar Series at the University of Bristol

Professor Roy McConkey is a leading international figure in disability research. In 2015 he was awarded an OBE for services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He will talk about developments in research over the course of his career, the future of disability research and how to make a difference through the impact of research.

About Professor Roy McConkey

Roy McConkey is Emeritus Professor of Developmental Disabilities at Ulster University, Northern Ireland. A psychologist by training and a native of Belfast, he has previously held posts in England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. He is visiting Professor at the University of Sydney, Australia, University of Cape Town, South Africa and at Trinity College, Dublin.

He has worked in the field of intellectual disability for over 50 years and has authored, co-authored and edited over 15 books, and published nearly 200 book chapters and research papers in learned journals. His latest book is: Disability and Human Rights: Global Perspectives, which was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2016. He has acted as a consultant to various United Nations agencies and International NGOs. This work has taken him to some 25 countries in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. He is a consultant to Special Olympics International on social inclusion and is currently involved in the international evaluation of their Unified Sports and Healthy Communities programmes, and their transnational project on global perceptions of intellectual disability.

The School for Policy Studies is an accessible venue. You can park in any of the University car parks after
5.00 pm (there are also a small number of spaces in front of No.8). Alternatively, there is on-street parking subject to parking charges/restrictions.

Please note doors open 5.15 pm

Registration will take place from 5.15 pm and refreshments will be available. The seminar will begin at 6.00 pm followed by a Q&A session at 7.00 pm. Refreshments will also be available at 7.15 pm.
